Los Mirlos, meaning "the Blackbirds" in Spanish, is a legendary Peruvian cumbia band founded by Jorge Rodriguez Grandez in 1972 after he moved from Moyobamba in the Peruvian Amazon to Lima. Signed by the Infopesa record label in 1973, the group pioneered cumbia amazonica, a distinctive subgenre that fuses traditional Colombian cumbia rhythms with psychedelic guitar, surf rock influences, and the sounds of the Amazon rainforest. Their 1978 album Cumbia Amazonica became a landmark recording, featuring iconic tracks like "La Danza de Los Mirlos" that helped define the chicha genre. Over five decades of activity, Los Mirlos have remained a vital force in Latin American music, with founder Jorge Rodriguez Grandez continuing to perform alongside his sons Jorge L. Rodriguez and Roger Rodriguez. In 2025, they made history as the first Peruvian band to perform at Coachella, bringing Amazonian cumbia to a global audience. Their hypnotic blend of tropical rhythms, raw Amazonian energy, and psychedelic undertones continues to captivate new generations of listeners worldwide.
